Instrumental Ensembles

The WestJax Jazz Ensemble is comprised of auditioned Brass, Saxes, and Rhythm members from the Worship Orchestra. They have been playing and ministering in Jacksonville since 2004. They play fresh arrangements of hymns, new choruses and exciting jazz literature! This group is very active in seeking new ways to reach out to the community.

Ministry Activities include:

  • Westside Baptist church services, concerts & special events
  • Various North Florida churches
  • Raiford County Juvenile Detention Center
  • The Gate River Run 2006, 2007, 2008
  • 2006 City-Council Installation of Officers for President Ronnie Fussell
  • Performance with Grammy nominated saxophonist, Dr. Jeff Kirk.
  • Multiple appearances at the Riverside Arts Market

The WJJE meets on Sundays at 4:30pm in the Instrumental Rehearsal Room. At home practice is required to effectively play this music and be prepared. Outside lessons are strongly encouraged as they help to focus on specific needs. All members are challenged in musical growth through music and through ad lib solos. Entry into this group is as space allows. We have 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 5 saxes (alto, tenor, bari), drums, percussion, piano, bass, and guitar.

Please contact Dan Mullis with any questions.

The WestJax Strings is an ensemble comprised of auditioned Violin, Viola,
Cello, String Bass and Piano members from the Worship Orchestra. The WestJax Strings meet periodically during the year. They play in worship services as well as other outreach opportunities.

Other possible ensembles are trios, quartets, quintets or more. Any member of the Instrumental Ministries can be a part of these groups. They are self run with the direction and support of the Instrumental Music Minister. They play in worship services, for special occasions and around the city.   You can really slice and dice the mass group into all kinds of ensembles so only your imagination is the limit!
